72 has a few quirks. First is that with one exception, no exit exists in both directions. Then, to confuse a little more, the middle section is merged with I-84, explaining the odd numbering scheme. The way I look at it, I-84's exit 33 is part of 72's exit 4. Ditto for 35 and 6. Exit 34 is exit 5 from 72. This may be the only place in Connecticut where the DOT tried to keep a coherent exit numbering scheme.
I think there have been a few changes here over the years. I remember that the eastern interchange of 84 and 72 as being a lot more complicated. Lots of weaving lanes and I think exit 35 was originally a right hand exit. I also remember (vaguely) that a few maps showed an extension of I-84 to Bristol. The extension is shown as proposed on a map I have from 1982, but it doesn't give a route number. 1992's map still shows it as well
